Artist Statement
My process is intuitive and not intellectual. Each work starts a new journey with the hope of reaching the flow state. The marks and the emotions dictate the actions that work themselves out on the stage of whatever substrate I am painting or drawing on. I see myself as an interpreter of the unknown. showing the viewer something that they have never seen before while maybe tripping a memory or experience along the way.
I am interested in the idea of reiteration as a process of change and regeneration, here drawn from Egyptian mythology, but also revisiting Nietzsche’s concept of the eternal return, in which the universe and all existing energy is continuously recurring across infinite time and space. My use of time within time or space within space can be linked to concepts such as multiplicity, molar and molecular structures, and self-replicating contingency studied in quantum physics.
Surf Station 90
In the spring of 2009 I was awarded an MTA Arts In Transit grant for the Beach 90 Station on the A line in Far Rockaway, Queens. It is one of the few subway stations in the world that you can ride to a surf break. It also happens to be the spot where I surf year round. I collaborated with the fabricator Willet Hauser to turn five of my paintings into faceted glass for the elevated station. The pieces were installed in 2011 and 2012.
